Hospital in Zielona Gora became convinced that the sun may help to reduce the cost of current economic activity. It decided to invest, with the support of a Regional Operational Programme for the region of Lubuskie in Poland, in the solar panels.

First, the idea appeared, it was followed by discussions, and calculation of costs and profits resulting from the implementation of an innovative project. The problem was the lack of resources for the project. Zielona Gora Hospital had limited financial resources, so with no external support, the implementation of the investment was out of the question.

Solar collectors from Cyprus

The exclusive interview with Mr. Tassos Frantzis, Vesta Solar Heaters Ltd., Cyprus

interview: Magdalena Ayoade

Could you please explain to our readers a little bit about solar collector technology?

The use of solar thermal collectors to heat water for domestic use is not something new. The technology has been around since 1960. Over the years though the technology has evolved and combined with the increase in gas prices and the concern for the climate, this technology is gaining ground every day. The system works in the following way. Solar collectors attract the heat from the sunlight and transfer this heat into a fluid that runs inside the pipes of the solar collector. This fluid is usually a mixture of ethylene glycol and water. Then a circulation pump transfers the hot fluid in a cylinder which is placed inside the house. The hot fluid from the collectors heats the domestic water through a heat exchanger inside the cylinder. Then the fluid returns to the collectors and the process continues until there is no more sun available.

Cyprus – the sunshine island with positive solar energy

In my search for the sun and positive summer energy I’ve decided to visit one of the most beautiful islands in the south of Europe, and have headed for Cyprus. Cyprus is not known as the “sunshine” island for nothing. It’s warm and sunny here for nearly the entire year. The second reason for which it has come to be known by this name is related to business and the unique way in which Cypriot has turned the sun into a source of revenue and become one of the most ecological countries in the world. How can we be environmentally friendly and make use of the Cypriot know-how or is it even possible to learn from that know-how? I will try to look for the answers to those questions in Cyprus.
